Description
Dancing Raisins Science Experiment | Density & Buoyancy Lab Activity
Science Topic: Density & Buoyancy
Can raisins really dance? Your students will love finding out with this fun and surprising Dancing Raisins Science Experiment!
Students will drop raisins into a cup of carbonated soda and observe as the raisins seemingly come to life, rising and falling through the liquid. This simple experiment provides an engaging way to explore density, buoyancy, and carbon dioxide gas.
At first, the raisins sink because they are denser than the soda. Then, carbon dioxide bubbles from the soda attach to the surface of the raisins. The bubbles make the raisins more buoyant, causing them to rise. When the bubbles reach the surface and pop, the raisins lose their extra buoyancy and sink again. The process repeats, making the raisins appear to “dance.”
This hands-on science investigation gives students the opportunity to make a hypothesis, conduct an experiment, observe results, record data, and draw a conclusion using the scientific method.
With a complete teacher guide, student lab worksheets, easy-to-understand science explanations, and multiple worksheet formats, this resource makes it easy to bring a memorable, low-prep science investigation into your classroom.
Students Will Learn About
✔ Density
✔ Buoyancy
✔ Carbon Dioxide Gas
✔ Floating & Sinking
✔ Properties of Matter
✔ Scientific Method
✔ Making Predictions
✔ Observation Skills
✔ Recording Data
✔ Drawing Conclusions
Students will discover that the raisins initially sink because they are denser than the soda. As carbon dioxide bubbles attach to the raisins, the bubbles increase their buoyancy and help them rise through the liquid.
When the bubbles pop at the surface, the raisins lose that extra buoyancy and sink again.
